Metal Baluster Install Kit – Wrought iron, also known as ornamental iron, is a metal with a low carbon content that allows iron to be strong and malleable. This type of iron can be forged and welded to create durable and visually pleasing stair rails. Wrought iron railings can be assembled piece by piece, which is usually the case of a combination of wood and iron, or iron panels can be installed.
Balusters are vertical poles that extend the length of the stair railing system. Baluster designs range from square, crooked, scroll to the custom ornament. Iron balusters are joined at the bottom with aluminum boots. The boots are fixed to a stair edge or balcony with screws. Balusters are left loose in the trunk until tight with a hexagonal wrench. There are usually two balusters up the ladder, and there should be no more than four inches between the bars those small children cannot fall through the openings. Balusters can also be referred to as spindles or pickets.

A shoe rail is an alternative to individual baluster shoes. The bottoms of the balusters can be welded to a rail that runs along the bottom of the bars to the stair pillars. When a shoe lane is used, the stair pillars would still be firmly anchored to the ground.
