Hollow concrete blocks are a type of construction material widely used in the residential and commercial construction industries. Manufacturers make these blocks of cement, water, sand and aggregates, although the exact formulas may vary. Standard concrete hollow blocks have a shape more or less like an eight number with square corners of takeoff and typically measure 16 inches long by 8 inches high by 8 inches deep.

Hollow concrete blocks can be categorized as either divided or smooth faced. Smooth-faced faces are the most common, while face splitting units have a rough textured surface that is often used for finishing surfaces. They can be, of course, gray or light brown or dyed with pigments in the concrete mix. These blocks are available in a variety of sizes and are divided into sections known as cells. While dual cell units are the most common units, cells of four and a single cell are also available.

Builders use hollow concrete blocks for the construction of walls, floors and other structural surfaces, both inside and outside a home. They are also used for the construction of footers and bases to support a building and evenly distribute the building’s load. Most hollow concrete block structures are constructed with mortar, and many also require a steel reinforcement to add strength and support.
