Large wood balusters – Balusters, or spindles, are the vertical posts of the stair railing that provide safe passage for anyone who uses the stairs. They also occupy a prominent place in the decoration of your home, since the stairs are commonly found in a central location, very visible. Replacing the heads of a handrail is an easy task with the right tools. Acquire new balusters that match the size and width of the old bars of a warehouse or home improvement store-convert the wood. Paint or dye the bars before installing them.
Cut the current balusters in half with a jigsaw. Equip the jigsaw with a blade to cut metal, if the balusters are made of metal. Grab the bottom half of a bar and wiggle it until it loosens from the railing. Do the same with the upper half. Repeat this procedure for all balusters.

Adjust the tip of a chisel in the hole of the baluster. Tap lightly with a hammer to break the dry adhesive and any wood stuck in the hole. Remove all the nails and small pieces of debris with a pair of pliers. Repeat this procedure for each baluster hole on the top and bottom rails. Measure the distance from the top rail to the bottom including the depth of the holes that will house the balusters with the help of a tape measure. Cut the new wooden balusters to match your measurements, using a saw.
