A staircase with missing belly baluster railing kit is not only unsafe, especially for children, it is as attractive as the smile of a hockey goalie. Fortunately, replacing them is easy enough for anyone who can use a miter saw. It only requires a little advanced work. First, you must find new balusters that match existing ones. It is unlikely that a residential center will have what it needs, but companies that specialize in the construction of stairs or pieces of stairs, can often turn an identical one for you into a lathe.
You will have to provide one or two samples, intact if possible. For painting grade jobs, maple is ideal because it is strong and smooth. For anti-stain grade balusters, ask the company to match the species as well. Finish the new balusters before installing them, either with paint or polyurethane, then follow these steps to recover their shape.

Custom balusters are made long so they can be trimmed to fit. First, measure the top side of an existing baluster, from the tread to where the handrail touches. Hook the tape measure on the lower edge of the new baluster, not on the spike, and transfer that measurement to its upper side.
